Robin moves from boy to man wonder as he takes the guise of grown-up crime fighter Nightwing in this origin story. Nightwing's fans will enjoy the exploration of what made him who he is. The story starts with the break between Batman and his sidekick, a result of Robin's conflicting responsibilities: to college; his supergroup, the Teen Titans; and Batman himself. The rest of the story follows Dick Grayson's journey to becoming Nightwing. The narration laid on top of the story, coming from an older and wiser Grayson, adds emotional resonance to the events. The tensions between Batman and his young protégé are nicely portrayed, as are Grayson's feelings of regret and bitterness following the break. Finally, Nightwing confronts the new Robin, Jason Todd, revealing a good deal about the character and his changing self-image. The tale's episodic quality occasionally drains its energy as Grayson's encounters with a circus lion, the Joker and Batgirl aren't always intimately involved with his changing character, but the story pulls through, arriving at satisfying confrontations between Nightwing and the most important characters in his life. Grade 6 Up–This graphic novel recounts the coming-of-age of Batmans sidekick Dick Grayson as he makes the transition from child to adult and from Robin to Nightwing. When he is fired for neglecting his duties, he first seeks guidance from Superman and then solace in his former life as a circus performer. Meanwhile, Batman is training a new Robin to take his place. Eventually an exercise gone wrong brings the two Robins together, and they must put aside their rivalry in order to rescue Alfred after he is mistakenly identified as Two Face. This story is mainly about the struggle of a young man trying to establish his own identity, and his attempt to define himself as his own superhero will appeal to teens. It is clearly set in todays world; Nightwing wears a hoodie, Batman must rescue a child kidnapped in a custody dispute, and a villain is caught because he decided to purchase an economy car rather than a gas-guzzling SUV. The artwork is clear and propels the story dynamically across the pages. The books engaging quality gives it appeal even to those who are not comic-book aficionados.–Heather M. Lisowski, Philip S. Great story, Great characters, Great adventure! GREAT!

This is a must have for Robin/Nightwing fans. The story fills in some great details on Dick's transition from "Boy Wonder" to "Man Wonder".

Every character has their own voice and familiar characterization. Dick is brave and resourceful, Alfred is caring, Batman is callous and Jason Todd is a brat. The linear nature of the story is wonderful, not wasting time in re-caps and histories, but going forward with a great adventure.

The only drawback is the blocky, cartoony nature of the artwork, but the story is so well-written you hardly notice it.

What are you waiting for, buy this book!

Nightwing: A Refreshingly Different Read

I am, and will probably always be, a Batman fan first and foremost. However, Nightwing brings an attitude, style, and level of action to the comics that is very entertaining. He is very different from his mentor. Sometimes this is good, sometimes bad.

For instance, I see Nightwing as more reckless than Batman. Batman always has a plan within a plan within a plan. Nightwing is also a clever and careful person, but he is not afraid to get his hands dirty in an all-out brawl.

Second, Nightwing has a sense of humor. Not gonna find that with Batman.

Third, however, Nightwing just seems more consistent. Nightwing is a lot more like Dick Grayson, where Batman is nothing like Bruce Wayne. This creates a continuity of character in the Nightwing series.

Nightwing has left behind the Robin role, left the Titans, and now focused his eyes upon Bludhaven. Eventually, he will become the protector of Bludhaven as Batman is the protector of Gotham. He even has an antagonist who is his perfect spoil- the Blockbuster.

Nightwing: Year One introduces us to a character who will take a path different from the one of his mentor.

The Prototype Year One Story

There comes a time when all Robins must leave the nest and fly solo, in this case taking flight under the name Nightwing. Yes it's a painful cliché but so apropos. Parting can be such sweet sorrow, but Dick Grayson needed to become his own man and the time was now. The evolution of Robin to NW was a long time coming, Nightwing being one of the best characters DC has created in years. Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty bucked the trend of disappointing Year One stories as the two take us on a whirlwind "This is your life" journey from past to present connecting his pre-Batman days with his current status quo. He first travels to Metropolis for a heart to heart with his former World's Finest buddy Superman, then on to the circus of his childhood, which also includes a visit from the mysterious Deadman. Of course no Dick Grayson story would be complete without Barbara Gordon, the love of his life and occasional crime fighting partner. Their relationship is a joy to read and one of the more poignant portrayals in comics. We are finally brought full circle and a bit of future shock with his encounter with Jason Todd. Sorry Dick, no one is irreplaceable. The dialogue is sharp and characterizations spot on. Naturally Batman has to play the heavy as a means of triggering the story to begin with. So despite some friction, this cast is one big but not necessarily happy Batfamily, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

The wide richness of a poet's commentary

W. H. Auden's work is in a way a challenge to the reader. Many times (Specially in the so called english Auden) it happens that you don't really know what the poem is about or why you like it. As Mr. Fuller says sometimes "Auden's merit lies in his vagueness". The Oxford professor Mr. John Fuller has written a highly accurate work in which he comments every single work published and unpublished by Auden. He states in his prologue that this is not a book for reading "in the normal way", meaning that "W. H. Auden: A Commentary" is a book just as a dictionnary is: A book in which you look for some information but you don't read from the first page until the last as you do it with a novel for instance. I actually don't think Mr. Fuller's opinion to be in this case too fair. In spite of the evident, permanent and necessary reference to Auden's work I beleive the tone and mood of his own comments make this book readable not only as an information book but also as a work in itself. The very word "Commentary" moves to think in a work written in order to illuminate another text. But Mr. Fuller builds his commentary from a wide range of "starting points". Sometimes is Auden's meter, sometimes the structural likness with other poetic form (As the "Sagas" - a nordic poetic form completely unknown to me) or just a philosophical or psychological concept used by Auden in a quite hidden way or lastly Mr. Fuller's own perplexity like in his comment to the poem "The Wanderer". Mr. Fuller's comments never exceed a couple of pages, but there he develops his own way of reading the poem and give us the chance to see this simple fact in action: How does a man read. In addition to this the book provides the whole technical and theoretical background required to enjoy the poem even more than after our vague intuitons. If you look for general observations about Auden's life or work this is not the book for you. But if you are looking for a way to refine your own readings by learning a lot of information hidden in Auden's poems and at the same time contemplate how works the interpretive mind of a great poet when he reads a 20th century classic, this is a perfect chance.

The Place to Start in Auden Criticism

If you want to better understand the poetry of W. H. Auden, and you want to buy only one book of Auden criticism, buy this one. (If you want to get a second and third, buy Mendelson's _Early Auden_ and _Later Auden_.) Fuller succinctly but comprehensively explains every poem Auden ever published. Fuller's treatment pays careful attention to poetic form, literary allusions, contemporary sources, and the development of Auden's poetic sensibilities, including his subsequent revisions of many poems. This is not to say that Fuller's commentary is the last word on any one poem, but he consistently enlightening in his comments, even for readers who are already very familiar with Auden's poetry.

One difficult decision that Fuller evidently had to make early on was how to organize his work. He might have organized it any number of ways, but he opted to order his book according to each volume of poetry Auden published. Originally, that was the right decision. Most early readers of Auden bought his books as they appeared, and since each volume originally stood as an aesthetic whole, Fuller's choice made perfect sense. However, now that a new generation of Auden readers (myself included) is reading Auden through anthologies and through his _Selected Poems_ and _Collected Poems_ (edited by Mendelson), Fuller's commentary can be difficult to use, partly because he does not usually use the titles that Auden later appended to many of his earlier poems. However, that minor inconvenience is more than compensated for by the extensive index.

One of Fuller's best qualities is his lucid prose. One does not have to be a trained literary critic to understand Fuller's writing, which is generally forthright and clear.

Understanding the deep meaning of Auden's poetry

Anyone, approaching Auden's poetry for the first time, meets many difficulties interpreting a language full of symbols and allusions, sometimes obscurely prophetic.
Fuller's book is like a candle in a dark room. The light is dim perhaps, not sufficient to define all the details, but such to allow you to see which direction has to be taken to find other sources of light. In my opinion a must have for whoever likes Auden and really wants to enjoy his poetry.

Typical "For Dummies" Perfection

This book covers it all and leaves no stone unturned, which is typical of any "For Dummies" book. Keep in mind this book is about the planning, building, functions, and construction of beehives. This book is NOT about beekeeping in general, as the title should tell you, but still--take note!

If you are a beekeeper who would like to learn how to build your own hives, or if you are a carpenter or craftsperson who'd like to make money making hives for beekeepers, then this is an excellent resource for you. We haven't been keeping bees for too long, but we've learned that the hives and equipment can add up! We frequently search Craigslist and other sources for handmade hives and accessories. Anyone learning to build beehives should enjoy their profits, as beekeeping is a growing hobby and many beekeepers are in need.

Or, if you'd simply like to build one or two hives for yourself, this is still a valuable resource. The book covers several styles of hives for construction, such as the Langstroth and a top bar hive and an observation hive. There are probably many creative hives out there to be discovered, this book covers several of the more common.

The diagrams and images are clear and helpful in understanding hive construction and function. The book also covers many common hive accessories and how to construct them, such as top feeders, hive stands, solar wax melters (that one is new to us!), and frames. Like I said, no stone has been left unturned. If you are interested in hive construction, look no further.

This is probably the 2nd book I'd say is a must have for beekeepers, the first being The Beekeeper's Bible, which has been our favorite resource. For a beekeeper, even if you're not going to end up building a hive, I think you can learn a few things from this book. It's worth checking out! Simply Superb!

I have over 30 years of woodworking experience and have built up an extensive library of reference books and plans for making all types of furniture .. If only they were all this good. Great reading, great plans, and a great service to our diminishing bee population. Precise plans and spot-on instructions. All I can say is it is simply superb.

WOW! This Book Totally Overdelivers on Expectations

I have been toying with the idea of doing a little hobbyest bee keeping and I have developed something of a library of references. Nearly everyone book I have has a building plans section, but none can hold a candle to this book. The Illustrations are nothing short of amazing. I wish the "Look Inside" feature showed at least one exampled of the way the plans are illustrated. They are crisp and concise. The dimensions are clear and the exploded views of the hives make assembly obvious. I just checked and the illustrations are from Felix Freudzon and he deserves his name on the cover as well for his contributions. I read a lot of woodworking magazines and books and this book has some of the finest build plan illustrations I've seen.

But I don't want to belittle the author. You can tell this is a labor of love. The writing reads easily and clearly. I was drawn into it and basically read it in one sitting. There was some skimming on the plan materials but even the basic carpentry was worth reading. Also, I have never seen any Dummies author use the tips and reminder icons as much as this author. I really think he did a great job of focusing his topic and laying out a stunningly elegant book.

- For what this is, I really don't see any cons. I want to be clear that this is not a complete bee keeping guide. Its focus is on constructing hives and it excels at that, but you will need to have another resource for beekeeping.
- If I was pressed to find something that I was disappointed in, it would be that he only has one paragraph on queen excluders and he does not show it on his illustrations. But truly, that is about the only fault I could find.

Summary
I see this book as being a long time reference for any beekeeper. The plans are absolutely over the top good, and doable (Although many require more than a beginners woodworking ability, especially the designs with lots of dadoes, rabbits and finger joinery.) But all in all, this should be on the bookshelf of every beekeeper who makes their own hives.

A incredibly well done and emotional conclusion to the Chi's Sweet Home series!

This was an excellent conclusion to the Chi’s Sweet Home series. My whole family has loved reading this very cute seinen manga featuring a young family with an inquisitive cat.

Chi has finally realized that the grey striped cat is her mom. This happens right around the same time her human family realizes that missing cat posters are looking for Chi. The family is torn; should they bring Chi back to her original home? Or do they keep her with them? They are relocating to France and need to decide before they make the move. Yohei, their toddler, is dead set against losing his best friend. In the end the only one who can make the decision is Chi herself.

This was a surprisingly tense and emotional Chi’s Sweet Home. Chi has to make a tough choice: live with her siblings and mom or live with the human family she loves. Chi is just as cute as ever, but there definitely isn’t a lot of humor in here.

Normally I say that this manga is for all ages; but there are a couple scenes in here that might be a little intense for very young readers. There is a scene where Chi’s kitty mom protects Chi and is injured which had my eight year old very concerned. Then at the end Chi is racing against time to get where she wants to be; this scene again had my son very upset because he was very concerned Chi wouldn’t make it home in time. These scenes are both intense and very sweet. To be honest everyone in the family was a bit emotional over the outcome; we have just grown to love this family and little cat so much.

As with all the other volumes this one is well illustrated and has beautiful pastel colors and incredibly cute kitties. We really enjoyed the illustration. This volume does wrap up the Chi’s Sweet Home series very nicely. Although to be honest we were all a bit disappointed and sad to see it end.

The only thing that wasn’t wrapped up was some of the side character plots. All of us wanted to know; what about Cocchi? Will he be alone forever?

Overall a spectacular wrap up to the Chi’s Sweet Home series; really really well done. This is an excellent seinen manga that cat lovers of all ages will enjoy. I highly recommended it. Now can we please see a spin-off series where Cocchi gets some resolution too? Pretty Please?

An emotional and satisfying conclusion

As someone who's been reading this since the series started in the U.S., it's sad to see it come to an end, but at least this is a satisfying and emotional conclusion to what has been a wonderful and warm series.

In this final volume, Chi finds herself caught between two worlds, as she must choose between her human family (the Yamadas), and her birth mother and siblings. The Yamadas are about to move to Paris, and they must also decide what is best for the little kitten that has become a part of their family. This is somewhat of a more dramatic volume than previous, as there are no kitty hijinks to be found here. It's focused solely on the characters, and the decisions that they have to make that will effect their lives forever.

Konami Kanata has shown a real gift for blending humor with emotion during the course of the comic, and that's no more evident than here. We feel for these characters, and we sympathize, because there are no right and wrong answers. No matter what is decided for Chi's future, someone will be hurt. But don't worry. It all ends happily in the end, and we even get a nice little special epilogue that shows where the characters ended up.

As a long-time cat owner, this has been a wonderful find, and I have enjoyed following the adventures of Chi and her friends. It not only understands the nature of cats, but has more human emotion than you might expect.

I didn't realize that this was the final volume of Chi's Sweet Home! I'm sad that this amazing series is over but it has been a fun adventure and journey for us (the readers), Chi, and the Yamada family. The art is amazing as always! :) I love that this comic is in colour! I haven't seen many comics that are printed in colour! I love the water colours used in this story! I hope others enjoy this comic too! :)

About the Author

M. Carme Picallo is Professor at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and member of the Centre de Linguistica Teorica. Her research interests focus on syntactic theory and syntactic variation. Her publications include papers in Linguistic Inquiry, Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, Journal of Linguistics, and Probus. She is the co-editor, along with Montserrat Batllori, Maria-Lluisa Hernanz, and Francesc Roca, of Grammaticalization and Parametric Variation (OUP 2005) and has contributed chapters to several international peer-reviewed collective volumes.

Even though Readers Digest put this book together most of the stories are in their whole; only half a dozen have been shortened. The 71 stories gathered from throughout the world average 11 pages each. This is the perfect book to familiarize ourselves to the works of a variety of classic authors. well selected, well printed, well bound

777 pages. 71 stories, mostly from the twentieth century. most of the stories originated in English; but thirty, especially well chosen, originated in other tongues. one of these — The Procurator of Judea, by Anatole France — is among my all-time favorites. this tale takes its time developing; but builds toward final lines that I have not forgot in five decades.
¶ I purchased from Rjc Books, at an attractive price; they very promptly delivered a flawless copy.

Memories of Eden: A Journey Through Jewish Baghdad reconstructs the last years of the oldest Jewish Diaspora community in the world through the recollections of Violette Shamash, a Jewish woman who was born in Baghdad in 1912, sent to her daughter Mira Rocca and son-in-law, the British journalist Tony Rocca. The result is a deeply textured memoir—an intimate portrait of an individual life, yet revealing of the complex dynamics of the Middle East in the twentieth century.

Toward the end of her long life, Violette Shamash began writing letters, notes, and essays and sending them to the Roccas. The resulting

book begins near the end of Ottoman rule and runs through the British Mandate, the emergence of an independent Iraq, and the start of

dictatorial government. Shamash clearly loved the world in which she grew up but is altogether honest in her depiction of the transformation of attitudes toward Baghdad’s Jewish population. Shamash’s world is finally shattered by the Farhud, the name given to the massacre of hundreds of Iraqi Jews over three days in 1941. An event that has received very slight historical coverage, the Farhud is further described and placed in context in a concluding essay by Tony Rocca.

About the Author

Violette Shamash (1912–2006) was born in Baghdad. In 1941, following the Farhud, she and her husband and their two children fled Iraq for India. They subsequently lived in Palestine, Cyprus, and Israel before settling in London in 1964. Violette began writing what would become her memoir in the 1980s.

Tony Rocca, a journalist, spent much of his career on the staffs of the Daily Mail and the Sunday Times. He has worked with a variety of British newspapers and magazines, and he’s the author of a memoir, Catching Fireflies (2005).

Mira Rocca, Violette’s daughter, worked in the American embassy in London and in the travel industry before she and Tony became hoteliers and winemakers in Tuscany.

Fantastic Story

Both my parents were born in Baghdad, and my grandmother would have been about the same age and moved in the same social circles as Violette Shamash, the author, did. This book, therefore, takes me back to my childhood stories, of the homes that were left in haste, the great bounty of the land and rivers, the friendships with people from all religions and the lifestyle that is forever missed.

This book is written in two hands, the first two thirds were written by Violette Shamash and tells her very personal story of Jewish life in Baghdad. It is told in great sensitivity and humanity, is mostly touching and frequently hilarious, especially if you can imagine the stories told in the dialect of Baghdad Jews. Violette's stories provide different aspects of life in Baghdad in the 20's and 30's through her own experiences, from school days, through various festivals, religious opportunities, the seasonality of life, commerce and street life all the way to weddings, family life and the relationships with the muslim neighbors.

The second part is an historical account of the role the English played in the establishment of modern day Iraq, especially as it concerns the overthrow of the regent in 1941 and the ensuing farhud, the slaughter of the Jewish community in Baghdad by some of their muslim neighbors. It focuses on the actions and inactions of the British ambassador, one Kinahan Cornwallis, that apparently had so much invested in the Iraqi project that it took priority over his loyalty to his country and prime minister.

If this book touches your roots I am sure you will enjoy it greatly and will wish, like me, that you knew more and listened to more stories. If you don't, this book will open a window for you into a world that, very likely, you never knew existed yet was so close.

Baghdad: The dream before the nightmare.

This is a beautiful story, and a desperately sad one too. Violette Shamash started her life in pretty idyllic circumstances, as a member of the Jewish community in Baghdad. You'll have to forgive me here, but I thought Iraq would have been pretty much top of the list for places you wouldn't expect to find a Jewish person. Turns out, though, that between the wars Violette and her family were among 200,000 Jewish people living in Baghdad.

It was a simple but delightful time.

And, guess what? The Jewish community and their Muslim neighbours got along together just fine. Mutual respect... Violette tells charming stories of an uncomplicated life where everything was great.

Until it wasn't.

Things changed, in a horrible way. Enough to make it vital that she, her husband and their children fled: first to India, then to Palestine, and finally to London.

I defy you to read this book without being profoundly moved. Iraq is a fragile and complex place today. How desperately sad, therefore, to learn from this book of its former harmony. How come it all went so wrong?

Today you can count the number of Iraqi Jewish people on the fingers of two hands. Please read this book, whose story must be more widely known.

GET THIS BOOK!! The book `Memories from Eden' is a fascinating book about a world that was and no longer exists, as well as an important historical document. I read the book in one day; once I started I couldn't put it down. The book is well written; the stories and the pictures do make you feel that life in Bagdad in the turn of the 20 century was as the title suggests a sort of a paradise. The historical synopsis and facts were smartly incorporated providing necessary historical context to the stories without being overbearing. For those who are like me, descendants of this world, the book provides an important connection to our past and heritage.
I enjoyed the book so much that in the weeks following reading the book I spoke about it with everyone I met and was somewhat obsessive in telling these stories to whoever was willing to listen. Maybe the best testament to how interesting the book is, is the fascination it created amongst my young nieces, ages 8 & 10. A few days after I finished reading the book, I visited my nieces and I started telling the younger one the stories from the book and she asked for more and more stories and was completely captivated by them. I think I told her all the stories in one afternoon. Later that day, when we met my older niece, the younger niece was so excited by the stories and enthusiastically started telling her sister the stories herself!
In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while everyone is talking about the Palestinian Refugees, this book is an important document of the forgotten refugees, the "Jewish Refugees" - over 1 million Jews who lived for thousands of years in Arab countries and had to escape in the 40's and 50's, following the bloody Arab persecution of Jews, leaving behind their lands, homes, property and the life they knew and loved. I hope that this book and others like it will create awareness to this grave injustice and will lead to a discussion for compensation for the 1 million Jewish refugees whenever the issue of compensation to the Palestinian refugees will arise, correlating the two, as should be.
