About the Author
A former reporter for U.S. News & World Report, Andrew Burt is currently a Visiting Fellow at Yale Law School's Information Society Project. His articles have appeared in Slate, Politico, and The Atlantic, among other publications. This is his first book.

Engaging historical perspective with implications for today

A fascinating and insightful look into how fringe politics go mainstream. I found the history engaging - artfully weaving a common thread throughout the periods that I had never considered. And rather than just stop there, the book also provokes conversation about how that past applies to today.

A must-read for any civic-minded American.

This book is incredibly well-balanced, both in a literary sense as well as with respect to substance. In terms of form, it's accessibly written, yet simultaneously eloquent. And when treating these obviously absurd bouts of hysteria, Burt importantly didn't write with a heavy hand of judgment. In fact, that he eschewed condescension makes this book all the more potent as a tool against future hysteria because critics will find it hard to paint his approach and perspective as biased. The threads he ties across the five movements leading into the present offer a compelling view into American identity and how we as a people can tackle future episodes. A must-read for any civic-minded American.
