Practical introduction to what BDD looks like in the real world

I am a huge fan of Manning books and have a library of several purchased books. Behavior-driven development was developed by Dan North as a response to the issues encountered teaching test-driven development to answer the following questions:

* Where to start in the process
* What to test and what not to test
* How much to test in one go
* What to call the tests
* How to understand why a test fails

The traditional development process provides many opportunities for misunderstandings and miscommunication. BDD in action presents the process how software development should be managed by both business interests and technical insight. Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) encourages teams to use conversation and concrete examples to build up a shared understanding of how an application should work and which features really matter. BDD in Action is a great introduction to Behavior Driven Development.

This is what I liked about the book:
* Presentation of Behavior Driven Development theory with real world practical approach to make readers comfortable and have a quick grasp on the subject
* Book does a good job defining the BDD principles and practices. The books shows you how to integrate them into your existing development process
* How to use BDD for acceptance, integration, and unit testing
* The book is filled with numerous examples of BDD tools and their usage for multiple platforms. For example The book covers automating scenarios using JBehave in Java, Behave in Python, SpecFlow in .Net, and Cucumber.js in Javascript.
* The book goes beyond introduction with inclusion of advance topics such as living documentation, running parallel acceptance tests, and continuous integration

This book offers quite a lot to consider and try, if you work in software development

Is "Behavior Driven Development" (BDD) better than "Test Driven Development" (TDD)? That's not the right question, John Ferguson Smart says in his well-written new book.

BDD techniques can be brought into virtually any software development method and help you build and deliver better software. "The traditional software development process offers many opportunities for misunderstandings and miscommunication," Smart writes.

One of the key approaches in BDD, therefore, is to get a project's major stakeholders to talk to each other AND work together to develop concrete examples of what each feature should do and how the desired software should behave.

You want software "that works well and is easy to change and maintain...." But you also don't want to waste thousands or millions of dollars on creating software that does not provide "real value to its users."

BDD, the author points out, "is a set of software engineering practices designed to help teams build and deliver more valuable, higher quality software faster. It draws on Agile and lean practices including, in particular, Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Domain-Driven Design (DDD. But most importantly, BDD provides a common language based on simple, structured sentences expressed in English (or in the native language of the stakeholders) that facilitates communications between project team members and business stakeholders."

The author describes and shows how to put BDD into action in real-world settings. If you work in software development or are hoping to land a job there, you likely need to read this book and keep it handy.

Set to be the definitive BDD manual

“John Smart has taken on a large, fast-moving space and produced a book that is everything I would want it to be. He has managed to capture the essence of what I was driving at with BDD while acknowledging the many others who have been part of the journey. As well as a solid theoretical foundation, BDD in Action delivers a thorough treatment of the current state of BDD tools, along with general structural and automation guidance that will most likely outlive many of them.”

I thought I might as well start the review by including this quote from the Foreword to BDD in Action, by Dan North (the original creator of Behaviour-Driven Development), because it sums up exactly what I agree John Smart has succeeded in doing. In an environment where there are still lots of new ideas being thrown around, often just in blogs or conference talks and the like, Smart has managed to consolidate the heart of BDD into one comprehensive book. In particular, whereas many books on BDD focus on one tool with with a bit of theory, Smart manages to provide more than sufficient instruction in a range of tools (including JBehave, Cucumber-JVM, SpecFlow, Cucumber-JS, Spock, Thucydides), and yet still undergird that with a “solid theoretical foundation”.

BDD is a very hot topic in software development today. It is an approach based on the seemingly simple premise of focusing on developing software that directly meets business goals. The increasing widespread adoption of agile methodologies has provided a stage for the necessary collaboration and fast feedback loops that make BDD viable and many organisations are seeing the benefits of adopting some, if not all, of the practices associated with BDD (whether they call it BDD or Acceptance Test-Driven Development or Specification by example or call it no special name at all). BDD in Action addresses all of the principle BDD activities, i.e. deriving features from business goals, illustrating features with examples, creating executable specifications to guide development, automating specifications and producing living documentation. In the process, other key contributions to BDD techniques (by the likes of Gojko Adzic, Chris Matts, et al.) are explained in just enough detail to enable the beginner to get started, while providing a handy reference for the BDD practitioner with some experience.

Working systematically through the BDD activities, Smart provides excellent signposting, examples and illustrations to keep the reader on track. In particular, A BDD approach is traced, from business goals to living documentation, on the fictitious ‘Flying High Airlines’ business, which is a tremendous help in providing concrete examples of how the theory works out.The repeated use of a diagram describing the principles activities, as they evolve through each chapter, is also very instructive.

The decision to deal with a variety of tools, rather than focus on just one or two, really increases the value of the book. Often the same exercise is demonstrated in different tools and for those who haven’t already committed to tools, it is a concise comparative guide to the features of different tools. For those who have already got a preference on tools, it will be a great benefit that the book cover’s the main tools more than adequately (avoiding having to try to translate Smart’s excellently structured content to another tool themselves).

BDD in Action is a very practical, hands-on manual for BDD practitioners. I see it as a great introduction for those embarking on this path and the kind of handbook that will be left out by development teams to refer to regularly. It doesn’t try to sell BDD, so other literature on case studies et al. may be better for that, but it is no doubt destined to become the definitive BDD manual for the foreseeable future.

FIVE STARS! *****Fast paced and an engaging read. The transformation of the telescope into a space ship and Ian and Callie's trip to Jupiter will really thrill young readers. The presence of steam engines, gadgets, and planet Jupiter makes it a fun story. Ian and Callie are developed well. A simple story with a science fiction theme that is intriguing.

The author has done an excellent job and the 'Jupiter Facts' at the end of the book are very informative for children. A thrilling science fiction story filled with excitement and mystery.

Ian angrily stomped towards Callie. The telescope started to hum. A second later, it shook. Smoke rushed out from the base of the telescope and the tripod legs collapsed. Ian stared at it in shock, while Callie smiled from ear to ear. The eyepiece then pointed itself towards Callie. A beam of light shot out from the eyepiece directly at Callie and a voice from the base spoke, in a deep voice.

About the Author
Leonardo Ramirez is a husband, a father, a Karate instructor with a 3rd degree black belt, and a writer. His first graphic novel, Haven of Dante, is a supernatural Young Adult story centered on an ancient war between the Dante family and the nine circles of hell. Haven of Dante: The Staff of Moshe takes readers much deeper into the world of the family line with a prologue that begins with the plight of Dante Alighieri himself!
His follow up is a Children's Steampunk book called The Jupiter Chronicles: The Secret of the Great Red Spot. It follows the adventure of two children as they are transported to the steam-powered cities of Jupiter, find their long-lost father, stop an attack from Mars, and witness the birth of Steampunk.

My heart and motive have always been for people who are hurting. These can be kids who have had to suffer through child abuse or neglect or an absent parent which can be equally torturous as was the case in The Jupiter Chronicles. It can also be young girls who have suffered an assault like Haven did in Haven of Dante. Young or old it doesn't matter. Those are the kids and adults I want to speak to because I've been there.

It's not just Science Fiction.

It's Science Fiction for the Human Condition.
Leonardo Ramirez lives with his wife Kristen, their daughter Mackenzy and their two dogs, Duchess and Tinkerbell in Nolensville, Tennessee.

Engaging Fantasy Adventure for Kids

Life has been tough for Ian and Callie since their father went missing five years ago. Ian is so hurt by his father's disappearance that he refuses to touch the last gift he gave him - a very unusual telescope.

Younger sister Callie thinks Ian's refusal to look into the telescope is ridiculous. So she sneaks a peek into it - and is surprised when the instrument transforms into a sort of space ship.

The kids are even more shocked when the machine whisks them to Jupiter.

Ian and Callie are quickly apprehended by the Martian Emperor Phobos and his Doomslayer forces, who had taken over the planet in their father's absence. It turns out that their father is part of the ruling family on Jupiter - and he was kidnapped from earth and held prisoner.

It's up to Ian and Callie to rescue their father and set the Jovians (the inhabitants of Jupiter) free from the evil Emperor Phobos' rule.

The Good Stuff:

Family values stand front and center in "The Jupiter Chronicles." The hurt and hardships of dealing with the absence of a husband and father are not sugar-coated. It's obvious that both Ian and his mom, Camilla, are struggling to cope.

As for Ian and Callie, they are typical siblings. They pick on each other and fuss at each other, but they have each other's backs. And Ian takes care to watch out for his young sister on their adventures.

Plus, Ian, Callie, their father Peter, and their new-found robot friend, Stinky Frank all exhibit the good character qualities of bravery, determination and loyalty.

Violence:

As a fantasy-adventure story, "The Jupiter Chronicles" does contain some action violence, but it's appropriate for the intended reading audience. For example:

- Ian and Callie are taken prisoner on Jupiter by a squad of enormous Doomslayer robots and thrown in prison.

- When the kids are forced to basically fight for their lives in the Drifterdash games, Ian rigs a couple of weapons that they use to literally annihilate their Doomslayer opponents.

- On two separate occasions, Ian shoots Doomslayers out of the sky when they attack their space ship. Ian also puts on his Fireflight - a contraption that allows him to fly - and blasts away at Doomslayers outside of the ship.

Magic, Sorcery and Spirituality:

Although "The Jupitor Chronicles" is a fantasy story, there is no magic or sorcery to be found. As for spirituality, Ian and Callie's mom, Camilla, prays every night for the safe return of her children.

My Two Cents:

"The Jupiter Chronicles Book One: The Secret of the Great Red Spot" is exactly what the author intended it to be...

...A simple flight of fancy that any parent would feel comfortable allowing their child to read.

Its strong family message and emphasis on good values is refreshing. And its Star Wars-like adventure would be an enjoyable read for kids.

As a critical adult, I only had a couple of small problems with the book. One is that it's difficult to determine when the story is taking place. The main clue is that they use candles for light. The promotional materials say the story takes place in 1892, but that is not made clear in the book.

Also, it's unclear as to how Ian is able to create weapons on a technically-advanced planet. Yes, he likes to take apart his toys and rebuild them. But that's a far cry from rigging space guns. And speaking of guns, how did these kids manage to be such crack shots? If they lived in 1892, they certainly didn't learn their technique on video games.

But aside from these minor issues, I highly recommend this chapter book for six to eight-year-old readers.

A fun new series to share and enjoy!

The Jupiter Chronicles: The Secret of the Great Red Spot, is the first book in Leonardo Ramirez' Children's Steampunk series. The story opens with brother and sister, Ian and Callie Castillo living with their mother, Camilla, a single parent ever since her husband Peter left years before. The kids are your typical brother versus sister duo, but what happens next is anything but typical. I won't spoil the surprise - although you can guess from the book's title - but I will say that you're in for a fast-paced ride through the universe, where you will encounter one of the most endearing characters I've ever run into: Stinky Frank. He's brave, resourceful, loyal, and well, stinky.

Mr. Ramirez weaves numerous fun scientific facts throughout the book, and includes a few important life lessons as well, namely no matter how "awful" you think your sibling is, they're usually your best ally in life, and most importantly: sometimes parents leave, but it's never the fault of the child.

Younger and/or reluctant readers will find this an exciting read, and older ones will zip through it in one sitting.

I cannot WAIT for the next installment of The Jupiter Chronicles - and I'm a grandmother!

The Secret of the Red Spot is a captivating Sci-Fi story of two siblings, Ian and Callie, who discovered a mysterious secret of a telescope hidden in the attic which leads them to an exciting outer space journey to the unknown. The story unfolds itself to an adventure on Jupiter revealing the truth about their father, Peter, and then a quest to rescue him. Captured by the Doomslayers, an order from Emperor Phobos, Ian and Callie escape with the help of a friendly Doomslayer named "Stinky Frank" learning the mysteries of the three Orbs that bring balance to Jupiter.

The protagonists are believable characters shown with realistic dialogues between a brother and sister. Their comical behavior and verbal exchanges connects the reader. The book includes an insightful reference guide to illustrate the terms, tools, and weapons used in the story.

Author, Leonardo Ramirez, writes with vivid imagery allowing the reader to visualize characteristics of every scene. Moreover, the plot has an emotional value highlighting themes of "Home is where the Heart Is", courage, and forgiveness.

The Secret of the Red Spot is an excellent read suitable for an audience of all ages. I highly recommend it!

Morley lived amongst the traders, artisans and gentry of England's major cities at a time when a market for recreational music was beginning to emerge. His entrepreneurial drive combinedwith an astute assessment of his market resulted in a successful and influential publishing business. The turning point came with a visit to the Low Countries in 1591, which gave him the opportunity to see a thriving music printpublication business at first hand. Contemporary records provide a detailed picture of the processes involved in early modern music publishing and enable the construction of a financial model of Morley's business. Morley died too young to reap the full rewards of his enterprise, but his success inspired the publication by his contemporaries of a significant corpus of readily available recreational music for the public. Critical to Morley's successwas his identification of the sort of music, notably the Italianate lighter style of madrigal, that would appeal to amateur musicians. Surviving copies of the original prints show that this music continued to be used for severalgenerations: new editions in modern notation started to appear from the mid eighteenth century onwards, suggesting that Morley truly had the measure of the market for recreational music. About the Author
Nancy Lee Cecil, Ph.D., has had a rich and varied background in education as an elementary school teacher and a literacy specialist in New York; urban Savannah, Georgia; and in the public schools in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She is especially attuned to the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse children. She received her doctorate from the University of Buffalo and teaches in the Department of Teacher Education at California State University. She has written seventeen books on literacy and has received the Teacher's Choice award for her book For the Love of Language: Poetry for All Learners. Cecil has published articles in many literacy journals, including The Reading Teacher. She speaks about literacy to groups of educators on local, national, and international levels. She lives with her husband in Carmichael, California, with two cats and a dog; there she enjoys reading, traveling, and hiking, and is involved in the issues of foster care youth.

Joan P. Gipe, Ph.D., has spent many years working with learners of all ages: in Kentucky as a reading specialist; in Indiana as a fifth-grade teacher; and in several university contexts as faculty, supervisor of student teachers, department chairperson, coordinator for teaching enhancement, university/school liaison for professional development schools, coordinator of field-based teacher education cohorts, and guide to doctoral students through their degree requirements. She received her doctorate, as well as a Distinguished Education Alumni Award, from Purdue University. She is Research Professor Emeritus from the University of New Orleans where she received numerous teaching awards, and is also Lecturer Emeritus from California State University, Sacramento. She mentors doctoral students for Walden University's online Ed.D. Program in Teacher Leadership. She has engaged in research related to developing meaning vocabulary, assisting readers who struggle, and also preparing teachers through field-based programs. Her articles in publications such as The Reading Teacher, Reading Research Quarterly, and the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy share with the professional community what she has learned throughout her career. Her textbook Multiple Paths to Literacy: Assessment and Differentiated Instruction for Diverse Learners, K-12 is in its eighth edition. She lives in the heart of Sonoma County's Wine Country, in California, and enjoys tutoring fifth grade students in language arts and math.

Marcy E. Merrill, PhD, before becoming a literacy professor at California State University,Sacramento, was a teacher and reading specialist in Charlottesville, Virginia, city schools; before that she taught public school in both Georgia and Vermont. She has taught students in many grades and at many instructional levels. Merrill received her doctorate in reading from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, following her undergraduate work in English and education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Currently, she works with pre-service teachers in the areas of English methods and academic language or reading across content areas, and with masters students in language and literacy. She has written several publications, and contributed to the Expository Reading and Writing Course curriculum used by California teachers statewide, and has presented at literacy conferences at state, national, and international levels. Merrill received the Community Service Award and the University Service Award from CSUS. Her research interests include content literacy, writing assessment, expository reading and writing, writing and technology, and digital literacy. She has two wonderful daughters who are currently in middle school.

About the Author
Zhang Yun began studying martial arts in 1973 in his native China. He studied both Taiji Quan and its weapons forms with Master Luo Shuhuan and then with the renowned Master Wang Peisheng, president of the Beijing Wu Style Taiji Quan Association, and went on to study Bagua, Xingyi, and Qigong. He began teaching in Beijing in 1983, and now teaches in Princeton, New Jersey.

Excellent book on little seen art

There aren't many books available on the tai chi sword, and most are on the more popular Yang style. This book is on the less well known Wu style, a later development from the Yang style. In the empty-handed version of the art, the Wu style typically uses a somewhat more forward leaning posture, but that doesn't appear to be the case in the sword form. Also (at least from the master I studied with for several years), there is a lot of chin na, similar to the Chen style, but regardless of what style you study, you'll find this a worthwhile book.

The author explains clearly and concisely many basic and advanced principles relating to training, practical applications, and theory, emphasizing the differences and similarities between empty-handed tai practice and weapons practice. The more advanced principles are discussed and are presented in a way that is more easily understood than in many tai chi books. The photo section showing the postures and positions and describing the martial application of each is worth the price of the book by itself.

This is probably the best book on the tai chi sword that I've seen. It's well written and easy to understand even when the author gets into discussing the more abstract principles of chi and of tai chi practice. The author's comments on the practice of the sword apply equally well to empty handed practice, as I said.

The sword is the most widespread Chinese weapon, and the tai chi sword form is a very special example of its use. It there's one weapon that a 70, 80, or 90-year old Chinese will still be able to wield with skill, it's the sword. Interestingly, the tai chi form is only about 150 years old, which I hadn't realized until reading the author's introduction where he discusses some of the history.

This book covers the shorter 32-position Wu style form. Although shorter than the long form and the most difficult positions have been removed, it will still be useful for those interested in the tai chi sword but whose time is limited. Some masters are critical of the short forms since they believe they have limited usefulness for truly cultivating chi and for self-healing purposes. These considerations aside, this is still a very detailed and well done discussion of the principles, theory, practice, and martial applications of the tai chi sword. The serious student, however, will no doubt prefer to learn the long version of the sword.

The author discusses the basics of the sword, including construction, different parts of the sword, length, weight, and balance, grips and how to hold the sword, finger sword or sword helper, jian flowers and jian circles. The applications show the use of the straight sword against another straight sword, the spear, and the curved broadsword. Footwork, stances, movement, and how to hold the body are discussed before getting into the details of the form.

The 13 basic techniques are discussed and illustrated, which are the cut, thrust, block, wash, draw, take back, raise, explode, chop, point, stir, press, intercept with the edge, and block with the ridge. A discussion of combination techniques follows before the author gets into presenting the actual form.

Most of the text, however, is devoted to the presentation of the form, including illustrations of the basic and advanced postures, and practical applications. There are 32 of these and all are shown in photos and described more fully in the test. A nice touch is the author's discussing not only the details of the body position and martial application, but additional key points and internal considerations for each posture and how the chi should feel in performing the move. The photos of the positions are very clear and easy to interpret.

The book concludes with two chapters on how to prctice and fighting applications. There are two appendices which present a lineage of the tai chi sword form and the accupressure points of the human body.

Many people aren't aware that tai chi also has a broadsword form, a spear form, and a staff form, in addition to the straight sword. It is my hope that some day another master will also write a book as good as this one is on those aspects of tai chi. In the meantime, this is an excellent book on the straight sword that will be of interest mostly to the serious and advanced student of tai chi.

I only have one complaint about the book, which is that in some of the photos in which the sword is held edge-on to the camera, the blade is practically invisible, making it difficult to see what's going on. But overall, this is a fine book on the tai chi sword and probably the best one I've seen so far on the subject.

The Art of Chinese Swordsmanship

Wow! This is a wonderful reference book not only for Taiji Jian (tai chi sword), but also for Taiji Quan. All sections of the book are straight forward and easy to follow. There wasn't any mystical "mumbo jumbo" I couldn't comprehend. The first chapter which gives the reader information about the history of the Taiji jian, I particlularly liked this historical information. Chapter two is for Taiji jian and Tai Chi Quan practitioners. This chapter explains clearly the "ins and outs" of Taiji Quan and Taiji jian. The author explains basic trainning, principles, elements, etc. I found this section of great interest to me having only studied Taiji Quan for about a year now. I believe the information I've gainned from reading this section will help improve my practice.I think advanced practitioners will find chapter two valuable as well. The remaining chapters 3-8 give the reader information on the parts of the jian, how to practce with the jian, basic movements,fighting principles, and a 32 posture form with pictures and detailed explanations. The explaination of each picture includes info about the key points, internal components and the movement itself. This is a great manual that I know I will refer to over and over again. This is a must read book for any Taiji Quan or Taiji jian practitioner.

With all due respect...

Let me start with the good parts of this book:
-Lineage charts in the appendix
-Most of chapter 8
-The form (but not very many of the applications) in chapter 6 is very clearly described
-chapter 1 wasn't too bad
-some of the sword vs. spear stuff

With that said, most of the book was a testament to either the deterioration of the art through generations of non-dynamic practice, or the old conspiracy theory of Chinese masters watering down the art for the westerners. Lots of "hey let me hold my sword out and you dance around it" applications. Lots of "this has a questionable chance of working in a fight because it depends largely on factors beyond my control" applications. Lots of "let me contort myself to follow some devolved form of footwork and try to force it into situations where it may not be optimal".

I know I'm swimming against the stream here, but hopefully this information will prove helpful to some.
