This book is a study in major and minor 2-5-1 progressions of Drop-2 and Drop-3 chords in all twelve keys arranged for the comping pianist. These rootless chords are the same as the Evans system, but in drop-voicings.

There are several fingering approaches that the pianist may use to execute these motions (since the spread of those four notes are usually outside the reach of one human hand).

The simplest way is to treat them like four-part harmonies with the two bottom notes played by the LH and the two top voices by the right.

A second possibility is play the top three notes with the RH, and then add the root back in with the LH pinky while the LH thumb picks up the "dropped" note.

A third method is to play the bottom three notes of the voicing in the LH and ignore the top voice altogether. These derived three-note sets are "Left-Hand Topless-Rootless Drop-Voicings".

The high art of drop-note chord voicing

I highly recommend Jeff Brent’s book, ‘Piano Rootless Drop Voicing 251s’ to anyone looking to develop greater facility and understanding with this essential jazz piano basic chord progression. Each voicing/progression is written in all 12 keys with no chord symbols, so the reader has to analyze (it is worth the effort). All student levels including advanced level students will benefit mightily from Brent's approach, which includes a full presentation of drop 3 chords and drop 2 chords in both major 251s and minor 251s and delivers virtually all facets of 251 progressions and voice-led chord extensions (they sound beautiful). Brent also includes left hand voicing of 251s using three-note chord/progressions that are derived from the original drop-note voicings. Given the fundamental nature of these progressions to all aspects of jazz piano playing, this comprehensive and powerful book is an inspiring keeper that will yield benefits time and time again.

In this collection of eight essays, South African novelist J. M. Coetzee examines the complexities of censorship beyond the model of villainous censor and victimized artist. Having lived in a police state, Coetzee's experience is that "the same censors patrol the boundaries of both politics and esthetics." By contrast, in the United States, the way for artists to get away with representations that some find offensive or forbidden is to argue that their work has some political worth. Though Coetzee admits he doesn't know what to think of artists who "break taboos and yet claim protection of the law," he remains committed to free speech, conscious of how easily oppressive righteousness can rear its viscous head.

In South African novelist Coetzee's intriguing theory, censorship arises out of a paranoid mentality when a dominant class, church or state, lashing out in fear from a sense of latent powerlessness, suppresses a writer or artist whose truth-telling gives offense. However, this book falls short of that promise, delivering instead an overly erudite and dense dissection of the major works of frequently censored literature. To his credit, the collection of works Coetzee has amassed is impressive?from Lady Chatterly's Lover to Catherine MacKinnon's antipornography treatises, for example. In these essays, J.M. Coetzee analyzes thoroughly and attacks the role and the (mis)use of censorship in arts.

Taking Offense
State censorship is an inherently bad thing. The cure is worse than the disease.
`A censor pronouncing a ban, whether on an obscene spectacle or a derisive imitation, is like a man trying to stop his pen.s from standing.'

Lady Chatterley's Lover
LCL is a tale about the transgression of boundaries - sexual and sexualized social boundaries.
D.H. Lawrence wanted `the end of taboos, the end of dirty language, the end of dirty books.'

The Harm of Pornography (Catharine MacKinnon)
MacKinnon treats pornography as a political issue, not as a moral one. She sees pornography as an instrument of male power, not pleasure. For her, male desire is one of the avenues through which male dominance realizes itself.
She shows a `striking absence of insight into the desire as experienced by man.'
Her analysis is also parochial, based only on specific US situations.

Censorship and Polemic: Solzhenitsyn
The heroic battle of one man against an enormous censor bureaucracy (more than 70,000 men).

In the face of the paranoia of state censorship, Z. Herbert opted for the `silence' solution.
He chose to work with allegories, thereby defending the autonomy of art (the power of art to validate itself) and proving that poetry can give a vision of an ideal world.

Erasmus disguised himself into a fool in order to be able to criticize the Catholic Church (The Praise of Folly). Coetzee's portrait shows us Erasmus as an independent and impartial individual, but therefore insulted from all sides: `I would rather die than join a faction'.
Coetzee's analysis is based on postmodernist theories. He shows us Lacan as a vitalist, an adept of Bergson's `acte gratuit' (`it is not at all necessary that the poet knows what he is doing; in fact, it is preferable that he doesn't know.') and Foucault as a romantic (`madness as a voice to contest reason').

J.M. Coetzee's book unmasks the real goal of censorship and the methods authors (try to) used to circumvent it. It is the work of a superb free mind.
A must read for all lovers of art, and specifically literature.

Young Lovers

I had preordered this book because I enjoy the author's varied work. After it's arrival, I looked at it and was hesitant because it is about young love, the challenges the lovers face and the mature coming to together as adults. I really enjoy her development of the supporting characters of Shannon's family and Madison's son. As I became hooked on the threads of their lives, I did not want to put it down and am already missing Shannon, madison, Alice and Ashton

Disappointing

Let me say this is the 1st review I've ever written on Amazon (or anywhere for that matter) but after reading the first reviewers comments I felt I had to.

I've been a fan of this genre for years, making the trek to the closest GLTB bookstore and stocking up on the latest Naiad offerings back in the early and mid 90's. Then came the internet - Fanfic - and Radclyffe! Yes I remember 'discovering' Radclyffe online in early 00's and was so excited when her 1st book went to print in 04.... there's nothing like holding a book in hand.

Shortly after Radclyffe arrived it was like the gates were opened and a flood of new authors appeared on the shelves. Gerri came along with Gulf Tide and Hunter's Way and I was hooked. Her stories were detailed and well thought out. You felt like you'd been to Tin Cup and Sierra City. Characters were developed and allowed to progress & grow naturally through the story. You actually cared what happened to them.

Now maybe it's me and I'm just getting older but I feel like Gerri's last several books were thrown together, almost like we were reading a rough draft of one her favorite go-to storylines...that of young, unfulfilled love, torn apart until they can reunite later in life and profess their undying love for each other. Think Love Waits and Behind the Pine Curtain. The difference with this one is everything happens so easily and formulaic, there's no real reason to care about the characters. And that brings us back to my original statement- I felt like I was reading a rough draft. Characters were one dimensional, and worse yet, stereotypical.

Please don't think I'm only picking on Gerri here. With any author when you've got 20+ books under your belt and are continually pumping out 2 or 3 a year it must be hard to come up with new and unique characters and storylines. I've found myself disappointed after reading some of my favorite authors lately: Radclyffe (haven't read Code of Honor yet though) and Ali Vali included.

So even with all that being said I'm sure I'll be purchasing Gerri's next book, Weeping Walls, because something is always better than nothing, the glass is half full not half empty, and a true fan sticks around through the good and the mediocre. I may just do myself a favor though and pick up a Kindle to save a few bucks on the e-editions. That way if it's a dude I won't feel so bad.

Wonderful Read

After reading the previous so-so review I had to add my three cents.

Every book I read, I read through a subjective lense Some of my favorite authors have, in my opinion, produced sub-par stories this year. Not that they were necessarily written badly,I just wasn't interested in the subject matter or couldn't relate to the characters or the situation. Some of the attempts at humour were just plain silly.

But in this book,my subjective lense saw a beautifully written love story. I never tire of this formula. This is the type of lesbian love story I love to wrap my imagination around. Love found,love lost,love hopefully found again.(I guess that pretty much describes the genre)

I enjoy coming of age stories. So I guess this book had it all for me. I generally read two or three lesfic books a week. Some ok, some pretty good, and once in a while, one comes along that's awesome. Like this book. But that's just me.

She investigates India’s “Gush Up” capitalism and how it is reinforcing a caste system that benefits the elite while wreaking cruel havoc on the greater population and the country’s invaluable natural resources. Roy reports on collusion between New Delhi and multinational corporations that results in the corruption and dysfunction of local governments and brutal initiatives, disguised as security measures, in which people are forced off their land to make way for highways, airports, dams, mines, and factories. Infuriating, but entertaining. Polemic, but true. Short, but grand in scope and insight.

With her outstanding ability to craft well-written, witty and biting sentences, and the canny insightfulness of her observations, Arundhati Roy achieves something quite amazing: an easy read that is infuriating, but entertaining, polemic, but true, short, but grand in scope and insight.

I’m not usually one for polemic writing and an anecdotal rather than academic approach to facts, and I’m not crazy about books that are actually collections of essays. Yet in her very own enraged, engaged and witty style, Arundhati Roy manages to bind it all together into one powerful narrative, and expose on less than 100 pages, more – at times surprising – aspects of the insidious nature of global capitalism (and on the threat it poses to our freedom and well-being), than a half dozen much longer academic treatises on the subject combined. While you will learn a lot about politics in what is purportedly the world’s largest democracy – India – the principles at work and the insights gained are universal in nature, so that if you don’t see the relevance of Indian politics to your life, you needn’t worry. This book is relevant! Among many other insights of global importance, it shows what happens if market dynamics and greed are left unchecked by an inadequate and corrupt political system. It shows that many things are not what they seem to be on the surface – and in your daily newscast.

To be sure, it cannot replace genuinely analytic inquiry into the effects of a “free market” system, such as Thomas Piketty undertakes in Capital in the Twenty-First Century, but no matter what your political persuasion, you will most probably walk away from this Ghost Story with a richer understanding of the world we live in and of an economic system that may have many virtues (its emphasis on individual freedom foremost), but that clear-thinking and astute citizens cannot leave without modification, if we wish to see our freedoms preserved – not only nominally and relegated to the make-believe form of consumer choice, but genuine freedom, in all actuality. In the same vein, I also recommend David Graeber, The Democracy Project.

Does capitalism still generate interest?

This is Roy's polemic account of the path India has trodden as a result of its fascination with the American way of life, a way that political and corporate leaders of the USA have been selling to the world for decades. The result? Just as in America, the wealth of the nation is held by the smallest of minority - in a nation of 1.2 billion, India's one hundred richest people own assets equivalent to one quarter of the GDP.

In a biting narrative Roy tells about the ills of capitalism and the self-serving policies that keep capitalism growing in smaller and smaller numbers of the nation's population. Her account is as despondent as it is infuriating. She asserts that one should not be fooled by the corporate philanthropy. She illustrates with examples of how corporate foundations from America win over protest groups like the Black Panther in the US and the ANC in South Africa, turning them into moderates who crack down on fundamentalists - effectively doing the job for the corporate organisations.

A less polemical work on the same subject of the unequal wealth is Thomas Piketty's book, 'Capital in the Twenty-First Century'. That book was recently criticized for using inaccurate data, but Paul Krugman published an article in The New York Times defending Piketty's thesis - in fact, Krugman claimed that he (Krugman) warned of the problem in an article he wrote in 1992.

Important and Searing Book on the Indian Polity

Arundhati Roy has once again does what she does best- in "Capitalism: A Ghost Story" she tears apart the muscular, fanciful renditions of India that one reads about in the WSJ, Barron's, or the fickle Indian press and tells it like it is- India's polity is riven by divisions along class, caste, gender, language, geographical, and religious divides; moreover, the nexus between big business and big politics (along with an oligopolistic media) has created war-like conditions across vast swaths of the country and, further, has created untenable living conditions for hundreds of millions of Indian citizens.

This book is also about the change public face of India, now interested in embracing power-politics and bigness versus any sense of justice, internally or externally.

Roy is in many ways not only a true progressive but also a foil to India's shrinking "liberal" community who like to profess great decency and erudition while destitution is commonplace right outside their doors.

Roy polarizes- and rightly so. That she herself is under such attack in a country she so clearly loves is a sign of the encroaching illiberalism of a country which once lay claim to a powerful vision (though not reality) of social justice.

Math Book or Evil Book?

I own this book and use it everday in my Pre-Calculus class. I like the way the book uses examples, it is very helpful to the reader. Yet, the book has some faults. The book does not keep a consistent pattern of how they like their answers. In the back, there are the answers to the odd problems. More often than not, those answers are either wrong or in no way helpful. The book goes through different concepts much too rapidly for comprehension. Each section is practically totally different from the previous one and only in several instances does it have anything to do with the chapter as a whole. The book is informative and well organized, though, and is better than some others I have seen. Overall, I will rate it with a score of two stars for it's lack of consistency, user-friendliness, and evil.

It is very important to have a good math book for the understanding of the concepts. This book has helped me greatly to comprehend the topics by presenting useful examples in each chapter, and it also did a good job pointing out main objectives/rules. If you need to do well in Pre-Calc start with this text!

A behemoth of solecism and cynicism

This book is not advanced, not mathematical, and certainly not about concepts. (And what a pretentious title!) I cannot recommend it to anyone with a drop of creativity or interest in mathematics.
The errors of content are few, but grievous. (The worst howler I've found so far is the treatment of logarithms of negative numbers: a sample problem uses Euler's formula to evaluate ln(-540) as i pi + ln(540), with no mention of multiple values or periodicity.) More distressing are the trespasses against mathematical style. There is a fussiness and fustiness throughout; eccentric and needless definitions abound. Whatever merits may be claimed for distinguishing between arcsin (infinitely many values) and Arcsin (range restricted to [-pi/2, pi/2]), there is no good reason to introduce Sin, the restriction of the ordinary sine function to the domain [-pi/2, pi/2]. What the authors call the "location principle" is known to the rest of the mathematical world as the intermediate value theorem. Calling the angle a plane vector makes with the positive x-axis its "amplitude" is potentially confusing in light of the other meanings of that term in trigonometry and complex analysis. And indexing the coefficient of x^j in a degree-n polynomial as a_{n-j} bespeaks a seriously damaged mind.
All this is unfortunate but possibly pardonable. The book's most damnable fault is the mathematical worldview it promulgates. Advanced Conceptual Mathematics is all about memorizing picky definitions and applying formulas proclaimed ex cathedra to exercises whose tedium is sometimes lightened by "real-life" examples. Rarely does an idea intrude; curiosity has no place. Argument is sacrificed to drill. No effort is made in the exposition to differentiate among the various parts of the mathematical enterprise: groundwork and grunt work, sensible conventions, genuine insight. In the interest of parceling the subject into lesson-sized chunks, the authors pass by opportunities for pointing out the interconnectedness that is among the greatest wonders of mathematics. (One particularly tragic example: graph theory comes just two chapters after combinatorics, yet no connection is made between binomial coefficients and the formula for the number of edges of a complete graph, which is simply announced with no discussion.)
This narrowness comes, above all, at the expense of interesting problems. The authors miss chances to review past work in any way more meaningful than the "mixed review" exercises that just rehash the same stultifying stuff. Here is another example of what goes wrong and how it could be better. In the section on natural logarithms, there is an exercise (p. 645, 38) titled "sociology," which states that "a sociologist has shown"-note the appeal to authority-that the spread of a rumor through a population can be modeled by a formula, which is then given (a logistic curve). Now imagine what might come next. Even if a calculus-based derivation of the equation is beyond the scope of the text, so much is accessible: a few plug-and-chug exercises to get a feel for the algebra; investigation of the meaning of the parameters; the initial- and final-time behavior; the shape of the graph; most important, why the model is reasonable for the situation. Alas, the problem in the book begins and ends with the plug-and-chugs. A student encountering this problem would be perfectly justified in concluding that mathematics is every bit as dull as it is commonly held to be.
Cynicism oozes from each of the book's thousand pages. Each section begins with an "application," as if the intellectual content of the math itself weren't sufficiently interesting to motivate and maintain students' interests-as, in fact, in this presentation, it isn't. "FYI" boxes scattered through the text offer, perhaps as a fillip against boredom, such instructive irrelevancies as "The earliest printed map is one of western China, dated A.D. 1115" and "NASCAR is the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing." There are inserts on buying a car, balancing a budget, choosing a home computer. The book is chock full of profiles, presumably meant to be inspiring, of college students who use mathematics in their chosen fields, which range from music production to food technology. Naturally, the profile subjects are ethnically and racially diverse (only disabled Caucasians are overrepresented), and have all the correct virtues. ("I want to be a petroleum engineer who doesn't have a lax attitude about the environment," says Deborah Hempel, a senior at UT Austin.) Mary Ann Terrazas (senior, USC) cheerily predicts, "A career in computer science will allow me to get a job almost anywhere, anytime"-and indeed, a mercenary spirit pervades the text. I am reminded of the story of Euclid's student who complained about the uselessness of the mathematics he was studying. Euclid had his slave boy give the student a coin, "since he must make profit from what he learns." Our students deserve better.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR E-book READERS

I had a major issue with this book which I think is due to it's hybrid nature. Unlike the vast majority of the reviewers who have already posted, I read the the e-book version, complete with the full accompanying graphics (which I do think add a lot to the story). Unfortunately, in e-book form, the formatting of the book causes serious issues. The pages are fixed, unlike most e-books where the words on a given page vary depending on font size and screen size. The book acts more like a .pdf than a traditional e-book, and I couldn't find a way to zoom in or out. In my opinion, in e-book form this book is unreadable on anything smaller than a Kindle Fire or Nook, and it isn't great on those. I tried it on three devices, a Kindle Fire HD, a Samsung Galaxy S3 and my PC. The font is so small on the phone that it was completely unreadable for me. The Kindle Fire worked better, but the font was still very difficult to read. The illustrations worked fine though. The most annoying thing was that I went to my PC thinking that the big screen size would make the book very easy to read, only to find that the Kindle for PC program will not display this book, in fact wouldn't even download it. I made do with the Kindle Fire, but it was a painful read. Anyone with a full size tablet should be OK, but anything smaller will probably be an issue.

Beyond that, however, Ms. Priest's first foray into the YA genre is a fun, if light, read. Numerous other reviewers have left summaries of the book, so I will skip that. As a YA book, I think it will work best for readers at the younger end of that scale. I did enjoy it and will pass it on to my 12 and 13 year old daughters.

For the young at heart

It's a tough world and if don't like the story you've been dealt, write your own. Two best friends are torn apart by creepy real world. May will never forget Libby and she won't have to. She's living in pixels. Flickering screens reveal Princess X. Are you up to the quest? The well crafted story is brought to full life illustrations. Good for the YA crowd and gateway to Priest's more adult offering like Boneshaker.

This book was really good a little creepy but full of twists and turns that will keep you wanting more. I couldn't put it down and stayed up all night reading it. Hope you enjoy reading it too!
