strangely written and just annoying

Occasionally I read a book that just leaves me annoyed. This was one of those. The story line looked very promising but it was written almost as it the author didn't know what to do with it. The premise that Sophie was imprisoned although innocent and was exonerated by the victim's husband in a deathbed confession had promise. You were eager to see what she was going to do with her life now. It was never reasonably explained why the prosecuter, Spencer, was seeking her out after she was released or and what he planned to do if he found her. However, a big portion of the book was taken up with this line of thought. . . how much he hated her for ruining his political career and she hated him for robbing her of 10 years of her life, etc. Then Sophie and Spencer both had these strange and very sudden personality changes. At the end I was just puzzled. I was left feeling cheated and annoyed that I purchased this book.

Tuesday's Child by Fern Michaels
Things always go from bad to worse on Tuesdays. The whole book comes down to the day of the week, in the most important of things that happen.
Mikala was just about to retire but the one case she lost the defender walked in and declared he had killed his wife. He wants her client to have all of his estate after he's dead within a weeks time. Sophia has been in jail for 10 years now.
When Sophia is released it's up to Kala's law firm to get her the money that is deserved her and to prosecute the lawyer who brought this to trial.
Love the travel, and mostly the familiness of the 4 orphans. Love to hear how their lives have progressed over the years.
Loved hearing how she spent her first days free from prison.
Both sides are going through and over all the testimony, transcripts, evidence, etc. to try to figure out who's to blame for the death.
Kala is now planning on marrying her retired judge Ben and living in Hawaii. They have hidden Sophia til things settle down.
All of Sophie's friends from the orphanage are together, contemplating the reunion with their friend.
Just when you think the end is near something else happens to make you think, wow this could really happen and just when things are figured out, they are not really.
Out of the hundreds of books I've read since Jan. 2012 this is the best by far on so many counts.
The travel, the sincere emotion while reading this, the familiness of the orphans and because of the way the characters are introduced they are not confusing and overwhelming because there are quite a few of them.

Tuesday's Child - A Thrilling Read!

Mikala Aulani is a defense attorney in the case of State of Georgia v. Sophie Lee. Sophie Lee a private nurse taking care of Audrey Star has been charged in the death of Audrey Star. Much to Mikala (Kala's) dismay the jury has found Sophie guilty and is sentence to life in prison without parole. Hatred for Ryan Spenser, the prosecutor, makes Kala's blood boil. She plans to some how bring him down.

Fast forward to ten years later; Kala is in the process of packing up her office and looking forward to retirement. Adam Star, the deceased husband of Audrey's, unexpectedly shows up at Kala's office. He drops a bomb shell on Kala and her staff. Adam claims he killed his wife and not Sophie. It is obvious to Kala that Adam is a sick man. He is dying and he wanted to make amends before he passes away. He leaves the entire Star Estate to Sophie to make up for the 10 years she spent in prison.

This is the chance Kala has been waiting for. She wants Ryan Spenser to pay for his huge mistake when he convinced jurors that Sophie was guilty of killing Audrey Star. Kala wants to ruin Ryan for taking away 10 years of Sophie's life. She is bringing him down.

Author Fern Michaels makes this book a real page turner. The characters come alive for the reader. I love the fact that she made Kala such a strong woman and a force to reckon with. This is the first book of Fern Michaels that I have read. I am looking forward to reading other books that she has written.

This book holds many twists and yes a few hidden mysteries. Just when you think you have it all figured out there is another added twist.

FANTASTIC - IDEAL FOR UNDERSTANDING YOGA!

EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH PURCHASE! Nothing else like it! I've wished for exactly this and here it is. You get so much more than a book. The product itself and all of it's contents are extremely attractive and well made. It arrives in a beautiful designer box containing; a superbly comprehensive yet easy to understand workbook, enlightening study cards and 7 audio CD courses (sessions) on yoga knowledge. Each element of the set can be studied separately or together and come home to nest neatly within the main box. Form & function are excellent and ideal for use, storage, transport and even as art to be kept out in a room and invite exploration for many years to come. For what all you get and compared to costs associated with workshops and classes, the price is a bargain! This you can unfold again and again.

The Yoga Sutras are revealed as 51 terms/concepts that are important to a deep understanding of what yoga really is. Each concept has a card with thoughts related to it, a lecture on one of the CDs, and a full commentary in the workbook about that concept. For easy and practical reference - included is a full translation with literal translation, simplified translation, original Sanskrit including transliteration, individual word meanings and sutra meanings of each divine thread. I highly recommend this "essential guide to the heart of yoga philosophy". It's perfect for anyone interested in or teaching yoga.

Must have to truly appreciate your favorite translation of the Yoga Sutras

Great Package. 7 CD's, Flash Cards, Fantastic Work Book. No matter which translation of the Yoga Sutras you like best, you need this one if you are serious student of Patanjali. This teaches you the Sanskrit needed to fully understand the subtle differences in how each translation is approaced. There are great tools, charts, diagrams, and guides to assist in truly appreciating a spiritual master piece. The tools to learn, understand and appreciate Sanskrit are extremely well done. Author approaches the work from the perspective that to understand the historical basis of the Yoga Sutras, how they were taught, learned (oral recitation), and passed on from teacher to student is rooted in the very language they are shared in. A key part of learning in this tradition is to actually chant or say the Sutra in the original language, Sanskrit. Speaking the Sutra is a key part if the learning process. The root sounds from Sanskrit modify and entrain the mind of the student with the seed sounds that are spoken in such a way that knowledge is revealed or perceived directly. In a sense that true depth of the Sutra's (or any Sanskrit text) cannot be fully understoond or grasped or known unless the tones can be experienced. From my reading of this text at least this is what I understand and it has a sense and feeling of accuracy and truth. I suspect the same is true for the original text from any religion. Many languages do not translate directly or easily to English. The author has done an amazing job in providing all tools necessary to dive deeply into the Yoga Sutras in a way I have not seen before.

by listening to the CDs in your automobile, and reading the book at
home the guide provides a beginning approach to the Sutras. the flash
cards were a bit of an overkill, but OK.

Mr. Walker is a retired senior instructor with over 25 years of experience teaching English at San Francisco State University in California, in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia and Qatar) and at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Using 540 of the 570-word Academic Word List (Coxhead, 2000) divided into 10 units, EVAS includes extensive vocabulary practice drills + learner-dictionary entries to support each word + synonym lists + a crossword puzzle for each unit.

The great beauty of EVAS is that it works equally well as a classroom text and as a self-study workbook. Sized like the grammar workbooks of the familar EAP Azar series, it's a portable write-in workbook which also contains all necessary reference materials.

Having all the tools for academic vocab learning inside one portable workbook is great! All reference material included means: no need for students to carry an extra dictionary, no need for the teacher to feel frustrated by students who won't carry proper multi-meaning learner dictionaries (or insist on using their paltry phone dictionaries), OK to use in computerless classrooms, and no need for teacher-created supplemental materials.

Also, in the 10-week quarter of many US state universities, there is not enough time for even the fastest grad students to complete all exercises for all ten units. It is an additional value of EVAS that a motivated classroom student can afterwards switch into self-study mode and keep working on the practices. For the self-studier, EVAS is efficiently designed to carry along for use at a convenient time, such as during a transit commute.

Of course teachers can supplement if wanted. E.g., I have dozens of EAP crossword puzzles, writing prompts, and neoclassical roots exercises in my files which are fun to add occasionally. But having used EVAS in my university classroom, I can testify that it is really very complete in itself, and your students will have everything they need on day-1.

Current research in SLA vocabulary (Nation, et al) suggests that mastery occurs after eight contacts with a new word. EVAS is designed to provide those eight contacts via various R/W skill drills such as cloze, matching, crossword puzzles. My students particularly liked the "word-part" substitutions: given the singular noun form, the blank may require an adverb or adjective or plural; given the present verb, the blank may require a past verb or gerund, etc. As a teacher, I most like the collocations exercises. (Collocations are the most difficult for non-native speakers but they pay the richest rewards in reading fluency.)

Finally, EVAS is affordable! In an ESL textbook market market dominated by glossy-cover books costing USD_60-100+, it is almost a miracle to find a comprehensive, intelligently organized, teacher-designed book for this low price. Because it's so portable, so inexpensive, and so complete, EVAS could be an excellent choice in academic-EFL settings outside the Anglosphere (presuming coverage for shipping).

I would recommend EVAS for these users:

(1) intensive academic English-learning programs with a university-caliber R/W target. Valuable for both grad and undergrad students. Instructors with affiliation, contact the author (details in front page) for free tests + template.
(2) self-study with a university register-control target. Business people and motivated independent students who want to identify and use the educated lexical register in their English writing.
(3) individual academic EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers. Recommend one asset copy for the instructor as a superb source of written drills, and additional copies for the students as locally feasible.
