How do you learn?
By Robert Michel
"When I ask people, 'How do you learn?' most of them know it. But when I ask 'Do you act on this knowledge?' few reply that they do. And yet to act on this knowledge is the key to performance -- or rather not to act on this knowledge is to condemn oneself to nonperformance." Peter Drucker, Know your Strengths and Values
I picked up a book the other day called How to Learn Anything Quickly, by Ricki Linksman. In the book are a couple of assessments that allow the reader to determine their learning style. According to Linksman, there are four types of learners: visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic. Visual learners learn best by seeing printed or graphic images. Auditory learners learn best by listening, or talking. Tactile learners learn best by touching and feeling, sometimes emotionally. Kinesthetic learners use their large muscle groups in learning. There are also people who learn best using a combination of these methods, however often people have one dominant way of learning best. On top of these four styles, Linksman places a second division: left and right brain dominance. She then has eight "superlinks" to learning.
If you read her book, and I recommend it to clearly establish how you learn best, you will find out what your superlink to learning is. I found out that I am a visual learner with a right brain dominance. Now I have something I can work with... I always thought I was a reader rather than a listener, and now I know why. Not only do I prefer to read over listening, but I prefer images to written communication. I like pictures to tell me what I need to know.
According to Linksman's book, as a visual right-brain learner, I "take information in through my eyes and am attuned to images, pictures, graphics, colors, shapes, designs, sizes, and spatial relations.... Only after they grasp the big picture can they focus on its details." Her advice to me is to learn through visual aids with graphic and pictorial content so I can see the big picture. When no graphics are available, I need to convert the spoken or written communication into images in my mind to really grasp the message.
Linkman gives descriptions of each learning style and how to maximize your ability to learn quickly. She also provides insight on how to convey your messages so that everyone can learn it effectively.

"Self-Esteem Saver & Studying Tips"
By RON 101
"How to Learn Anything Quickly", this title attracted me to read the book. If one can learn anything fast, then why not use it to overcome spelling mistakes? As far as I recall I was and still am a notorious speller with frequent and repeated spelling mistakes. I was sure that I lacked some major attributes that caused me to err in spelling. Being a spelling "handicapped" I tried to overcome it by consulting my professors, friends, write multiple times the same word, read books about spelling improvement, but to no avail. Till I read this book.
It turns out that for correct spelling one needs to use his LEFT brain's hemisphere which process words and language in a sequential order (page 43), but I used the RIGHT brain's hemisphere that process words in an associative way. Hence I came with the incorrect spelling of words, as " proffessor" written mistakenly with double f, associating it with an "office" ... at last I know the cause of my spelling mistakes. Eureka!!!!
Since there are no specific instructions for solving spelling problems, I consulted the book's appendix, which contains general guidelines prepared for the 8 basic learning styles: visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic each with either left or right brain hemisphere preferences. To solve my spelling problems I applied the left hemisphere proceedings with my individual learning styles: visual and auditory, avoided associations which triggered past mistakes. It works!!! At least in the past 3 days (have the book only 10 days) I wonder if this approach will prove itself on the long run. Familiarity with the term's etymology should be helpful too unless its pronunciation is weird, as in "laugh"...where did "f" come from? In this and similar occasions one should fall back on techniques suggested in this book.
Chapter #: 19 of this book is invaluable; it supports and teaches to cope with traumatic past failures. People tend to remember and perceive years after graduation or even whole life long, the pain, degradation, loss of confidence and self-esteem, thus doubting their ability to succeed in unfamiliar tasks or future exams. Premonitions of failure tend to fulfill themselves. To break this cycle of self-esteem destruction this chapter teaches techniques for: relaxations, reducing stress, building a positive attitude, and visualize success, on the road to reinstate confidence and self-esteem. The author asserts that past exams failure were mainly caused by incompatibility between the student learning style and the style he was taught in; consequently past failures aren't entirely the student's fault. Therefore bitter past memories should be forgotten and done with.
The 19th chapter should be Xeroxed and, circulated among all students of any age at all schooling levels. Or alternatively there should be a copy of this book in every school library. People that already completed their education would tremendously benefit too; even if chapter # 19 is the only chapter they'll read of the entire book.
The book also contains some exercise and tips to retain the studied material.
A slight drawback, this book describes only the 8 classical types; one could deduce some of the more complexes types. But the book does not deal with a score of perfect tie a "Supper Mix ??" between left hemisphere, right hemisphere and integrated brain preferences, which I unfortunately possess.

This is the most important self-help book ever!
By N. C. Shaw
I wish I had had this knowledge available to me before I graduated high school. It could have saved me such grief! and made a huge difference in how I pursued the thirty five years following high school. Even though I have less than 20 years left before I can retire, the knowledge I've gained in understanding myself and others is invaluable. Give this book as a gift to a high school senior and you will help them succeed in everything, higher education, relationships, career, etc. The assessments were simple and didn't take much time, and well worth the few minutes spent on them. This book should be required reading for anyone considering teaching as a career.
