Picking up a copy of my quarter-century old book "Getting The Most From Your Rabbit" – especially if one were lucky enough to have the three updates done for it in '82, '83 and '84 in the pages of this magazine – one might be motivated to ask, "What happened after that?" As if in answer, Veloce Publishing, of merry old England, just sent me its new book, VW Golf – Five Generations of Fun.

The roughly 8-by-l0 firm-cover book is written by Richard Copping, with many of the photographs taken by Ken Cservenka. It's available at Amazon.com for about $23. You can check it out at www.veloce.co.uk (type "Golf" in the search box), where the publisher says: "The combination of model history, coupled to hot hatch performance, all comprehensively illustrated through major photo shoots and detail pictures, make this the complete guide to the five Golf generations. With all models, including Golf spin-offs, assessed, enthusiast-driving opinions shared and marketing policy discussed, this book is a unique hot Golfology!"

U.S. readers are going to be surprised at the publisher's use of color (colour, the Brits say) – on every page. It's packed with bright photographs that are sometimes dazzling, even under-hood shots coming alive in both factory photos and show shoots. While there is obviously a GTI emphasis, no UK model, even minor decorative series, is left out.

Of course, the book concentrates on the UK versions of the cars, but the rest of the world is not completely ignored: The author notes, for example, that in the United States, it was – and is now again – the Rabbit. In fact, American readers are going to find the most familiar territory in the last chapter.

When I was asked to review 'Golf – Five Generations of Fun' I wasn't expecting much – most model specific books I've come across in the past have usually been all glossy photographs and minimal text, but that view swiftly changed when I opened the book and turned to the contents page.  Commencing with a brief history pre-Golf and concluding by mentioning the Rabbit, Vento/Bora/Jetta and cabriolet models this book has it all, but it is the chapters covering the five generations of hatchback that people will be interested in and where I was most impressed.   So comprehensive is this book that I defy any anorak to come up with a missing fact - along with background information on each model the text provides detailed specifications and documents the changes and upgrades afforded to each generation of Golf. Concluding the hatchback history are the MK5 R32 and GTI Edition 3o models which to my knowledge only leaves out the later release Pirrelli Edition and very recently announced MK6!  While the text is well written and detailed, that is only half the story and it is the images which really impress. With a mixture of brochure images, original advertising posters and show car pictures the glossy detailed images that accompany each chapter richly illustrate how the Volkswagen Golf has evolved from cute baby (MK1) to chubby teen (MK4) and on to current grown up incarnation that is so plentiful on the UK roads – testament to the enduring popularity of Volkswagen's family hatchback.  I'm sure you've realized by now that I really enjoyed this book and as a MK5 owner perhaps I'm a little biased, but with comprehensive information on each of the five generations of Golf and those wonderful photographs it is a must-have for any Volkswagen fan.

About the Author

Richard Copping has been a follower of the Volkswagen marque since acquiring his first car, a Beetle, in 1977. Although still an ardent fan of VW’s air-cooled heritage, in recent years he has succumbed like so many to the charms of Europe’s best selling hatch, adding the Golf to the portfolio of vehicles he writes about. His student days spent learning the craft of the historian have ensured a lively, authoritative style to his work and genuine empathy with the spirit of the age he is writing about.

Photographer Ken Cservenka bought his first Beetle in 1969 and has been involved with VW's ever since. His technical knowledge and ability is widely recognized, while his pictures of Beetles and other VW models stand out from the crowd.

Dated But Good Quality History of the Volkswagen Golf through 2005

As noted in another review, this softbound book is focused on British market versions of the Golf and makes extensive use of Volkswagen press material. This is not a criticism of the photographs which are high quality and help tell the story. I could have done with fewer quotes from VW sales material and would have found some data tables useful, comparing the different versions. There is a section of the book that briefly discusses the Golf/Rabbit in America. If you are looking for English language books specifically on the Volkswagen Golf GTI, there simply isn't much available. This book ends with the Mark 5 version. I recommend Russell Hayes "The Volkswagen Golf Story" The Volkswagen Golf Story: 40 Years of the Second People's Car for readers looking for a more current history, published in 2014 and available through Amazon. Although it covers the entire Golf line, it is reasonably up-to-date and has extensive discussion of the GTI in all versions from the Mark I to the Mark 7. I ended up buying both and added the two Brooklands Books softbound books that contain collections of contemporary magazine reviews of the GTI from 1976-1991 VW Golf GTI 1976-1991 -Limited Edition Extra in one book and 1976-1986 VW Golf GTI, 1976-86 (Brooklands Books Road Tests Series in the other, with some duplication of articles between the two.

Mark These Golfs

Couple problems: was written in England and all photos are of right-hand drive vehicles. Also includes all England-only options and models. No reference to Harlequins. Also is not easy to write a book on a model still in current production. I would be compelled to buy again after Mark 6 and 7 models are included....but won't since I don't like RHD.

About the Author

Arthur Vincie has over fifteen years of film and television production experience as a line producer, producer, and director. Vincie has line produced or production managed numerous independent films and is very active in the New York City independent filmmaking community. He has done production work for major television networks, including NBC, ABC, and BBC America. He founded and currently runs Chaotic Sequence Inc., a company that produces shorts and features. He recently wrote and directed the feature film Found in Time, which won the Best Sci-Fi Feature at the 2012 Shriekfest Sci-Fi/Horror film festival.

a smart buy

as a producer of indie films, i can tell you that pre-production can really make or break a project. if you are organized during pre-pro, then your cast, crew, locations and vendors will make life easier for you during production, you won't have as many fires to put out, and you will have a much better shot at getting what you need on set and completing on schedule and on budget. a book like this has been needed for a long time -- one that gives you the tools you need - including paperwork and forms - to get your act together and instill confidence in your cast and crew. considering how many production books are out there and the fact that your time and funds are limited, you'd be smart to buy this process-oriented book and get moving on your project.

I am a NY filmmaker too. I Can tell with certainty that this book knows what its talking about. If you have an idea, these days the best thing you can so it just try to go out and make it. Just do it. This book will be a great tool to help you get ready.

highly recommend

I recommend this book to any filmmaker thinking of making an independent feature. Having heard Arthur Vincie speak in person about the process he goes through when he produces, writes and directs his own movies, I was looking forward to reading it, with the hope that it would contain the same incredibly useful information I've heard him discuss in person. It does, covering every step of the process in detail, from scripting and pre-production, through production and distribution. And, while there are other books on the subject available, what sets this one apart is how well it explains the balance between the artistic process the writer/director goes through, and the practical decisions the producer has to consider, especially when working low budget. Vincie shows how the two effect each other and then offers a lot of creative solutions for dealing with limited resources without compromising your artistic vision.

I don't like sneaky business books

While the author has something reasonable to write I don't like the embedded files that lead you to a purchase site that beckons you to "buy membership" before being allowed to read references the author points to in his book via embedded links.

I hate that.

If you're going to write a book do so in plain language. If you want to entice people to buy from your store build a website.

There is a reason why this book is listed as a zero price. He's counting on you to buy what's waiting at the end of those embedded links.

Ugh! Save yourself.

Well organized, relevant content

This is a great read for anyone who is considering launching a business. The book concisely outlines the process of setting up, raising capital for, and launching your new enterprise. Easy, informative read. Great resource!

This e-book doesn't beat around the bush. It features simple analogies and effective anecdotes, and links the learned material to real world resources within the text and at the end of the chapters. This meant when I read about how to pitch my idea to investors, I could tap on a supplemental article within the text, increase my understanding of the subject, and then return to reading where I left off.

I'd say the best part is the video links; if you want to take a quick break from reading, it's easy to tap on a video and let an expert tell you more about the subject. Great resource for first time entrepreneurs and for business owners who want to increase their learning on a certain part of the start-up process.

"It depends on you, dear friend"

I studied with Boulanger, for almost two years. What I miss most in this biography is a portrayal of Mlle's grace and charm, at least later in life. What she endured earlier because of gender and family situation would've sent weaker personalities to the madhouse, yet somehow she managed and continued to move forward--perhaps her faith helped her forgive (but not forget, e. g., Rachmaninoff)? As for Ravel, I suspect it was he who rebuffed her; like Saint-Saens, Ravel found her gender impossible to bear in the professional world. I'm sure it hurt her. But she respected and admired his work, allowing it to be performed often. As for her teaching philosophy/methods, read Paul Valery and Don Campbell. Then do a hundred Vidal basses.

There is a lot to relate to in this book. The description of Boulanger's overbearing mother brings back memories in which I thought my parents were overbearing. The description of Boulanger's problems in growing old frightened me, since I am approaching that stage myself.

Like Mr. Shapiro, I wondered why Boulanger couldn't get along with Ravel. That conflict is mentioned for the first time on page 114, phrased in such a way as to imply that the reader already knows about it. I wonder whether the author forgot to explain this, or whether she herself did not know.

I was disappointed that I did not learn more about how Boulanger came to be the composition teacher for most of the outstanding composers of her time. As an aspiring composer, I would like to take those techniques and apply them to myself. But the author does not promise such a discussion, so I can't hold her guilty.
