Domestic Rom Com Horror

Completely bizarre. Totally weird. Oddly alluring. Strangely funny.
I have no other words. Honest. Because I have never. In my life. Read anything so weird and yet so entertaining.

This is not a comedy!

Yeah this is a lovecraftian play, and there are jokes, but this is not a comedy. You might laugh through the whole play, but your not gonna laugh through the ending.
It is an example of starcrossed lovers If I ever saw one.
Also it's free people buy it and even if you never read it or you don't like it you didn't lose anything,

A poignant take on the "mythos."

Theatrical horror is a rare commodity. All too often, it focuses more on camp or parody than straightforward terror. For every "The Woman in Black" there are a dozen "Evil Dead: The Musical"s. Or, audiences seeking on-stage horror get treated to performances that veer so far towards the avant garde that they become more art exhibit than horror show. And, while this is a perfectly valid form of self-expression, for a horror junkie, it gets a little frustrating.
I was thrilled to run across "When Cthulhu Met Atlach-Nacha" because it does what so many horror-based plays avoid: it tells a simple story with real characters while building an atmosphere of dread. Cuthbert and Ashton come across as nicely realized with enough space left for a cast to fill in the blanks. The staging suggestions are helpful (if a bit challenging at times - hello quick changes!) and unobtrusive. And, there is a healthy dose of humor that never comes across as glib or tongue-in-cheek.
Most importantly, to me at least, "When Cthulhu Met Atlach-Nacha" respects Lovecraft's view of the universe as cold, indifferent and barreling towards oblivion. The religions of the two protagonists are shown to be as misguided and hopeless as is fitting a Lovecraftian universe and their fates are appropriate without being nihilistic.
Also, whoever gets cast as the landlord is a lucky lucky person.
I enjoyed this play immensely and hope Mr. Ryker continues to contribute cosmic horror to the theater.
